Albert Nobbs is an ordinary waiter and resident of a hotel in Dublin. Glenn Close plays Albert, a man who has lifeless eyes and very few facial expressions, in this movie that is set in the 1800s. His eyes reveal a lot about his life; he’s been doing his job for years, has no family, and stores money away like a squirrel protecting its food for the winter.
Albert is someone who does not show up on the radar of many people except for being prompt and dependable. No one really cares much about where he came from as long as he gets done what needs to be done. He never really allows the possibility of having a partner in his life who he can share things with and when he begins to see an opportunity, it doesn’t always work out.
Close disappears into the role so much that you might not think it’s even her playing the part. She had a huge hand in making this movie happen by writing the screenplay and acting and producing it.
As a matter of course, the movie moves into territory that Albert is not completely okay with, which produces the drama of the movie. There are some quirky moments that produce laughs, but for the most part this is a serious movie about people that could have, in all seriousness, passed under the radar in such circumstances and nobody would be the wiser.
It’s a serious contender for the awards shows coming up early next year especially since critics love women when they dress as men. When a man dresses like a woman, it’s a comedy but if it’s reversed, it’s a drama. Funny that. Close is battling Meryl Streep in her role as Margaret Thatcher, which is supposed to be excellent as well. Did you see Albert Nobbs? What did you think?
